Stark Mews development by Eastbank

Eastbank is pleased to announce the completion of Stark Mews, an elegant and environmentally focused boutique-site development in Walthamstow. Designed in collaboration with Metashape Architects and led by architect Ian Liptrot, the project demonstrates what can be achieved when thoughtful design is applied to a modest, previously overlooked pocket of urban land.

Although Eastbank’s work today is centred primarily on refurbishment, reuse and the upgrading of existing buildings, Stark Mews represents a standout moment in our development story – a rare opportunity to create new homes from the ground up, using materials and methods that reflect our long-held values.

What was once a run of disused garages off Wolsey Avenue has been transformed into four contemporary mews-style homes, arranged around a shared landscaped courtyard. The scheme speaks to Eastbank’s long-standing commitment to:

  • making the best use of constrained urban land
  • delivering housing that respects its surroundings
  • prioritising sustainability and longevity

While new-build development is not Eastbank’s core focus, Stark Mews remains an example of how we approach design-led urban regeneration when the right site and circumstances align.

“Stark Mews is a one-off opportunity to show what’s possible on a small, complex site – but our future is in the intelligent reuse of existing buildings. That’s where we believe we can make the greatest long-term impact.”

“This project may be unique in our recent portfolio, but the principles behind it guide everything we do.”

Green roof solution at Stark Mews Wolsey Avenue

Stark Mews features a suite of high-performance, environmentally minded details, many of which mirror the standards Eastbank now applies across its refurbishment portfolio:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Underfloor Heating
  • Velfac triple-glazed windows
  • ZinCo green roofs, improving biodiversity and rainwater management
  • White glazed and textured bricks by Wienerberger, selected for durability and character
  • Secure Asgard cycle storage for each home
  • Predicted EPC ‘A’ rating and Environmental CO₂ Rating A
  • Designed to achieve Gold Standard security performance.

These features were chosen to ensure long-term quality and reduced environmental impact – principles that Eastbank continues to champion in all areas of its work.

Eastbank appointed Metashape Architects to bring the project to life. Their design uses crisp white façades and Sækkeskuring render to add depth and texture, giving the development a crafted, Scandinavian-influenced character that sits comfortably within its London setting.

Each home is dual-aspect, benefiting from excellent daylight and ventilation, while the courtyard layout creates a sense of community seldom found on compact urban sites.

Architect Ian Liptrot reflects:

“This wasn’t just about design; it was about precision. Working with Eastbank meant we could push sustainable detailing without compromise – and that shows in every corner of this project.”

A Distinctive Project at a Turning Point for Eastbank

Stark Mews arrives at a moment when Eastbank is increasingly focused on refurbishment-led development, adapting and upgrading existing buildings to help meet London’s evolving needs.

While new-builds like Stark Mews are now the exception rather than the rule, the project represents what Eastbank has always stood for:

  • Thoughtful use of land
  • Quietly confident architecture
  • Enduring materials
  • Homes designed to last.
